GMVEMSC Member Agencies and providers,

Typically the Standing Orders are finalized and released early in January each year. This is so providers have ample time to study, test and prepare for the June 1st implementation. Unfortunately, the Standing Orders committee has missed that expected release time due to other mitigating factors. In the effort to provide you the most effective protocol possible, we are working on adding treatments for eclampsia, croup, hypertension in pregnancy and uncontrolled hemorrhage, to name a few. This includes the possible addition of tranexamic acid, magnesium sulfate, racemic epinephrine and nifedipine to the drug bag.

The challenge with any new drug bag additions is that it requires buy-in from all the participating pharmacies. On top of that, the availability of the medication in the format and concentration we want is also considered. Adding four meds in one year was a pretty lofty goal. There are ongoing conversations going on right now to sort all this out. The issue is that we can’t release the protocol till we have determined all the variables and written them into the treatment modalities and the drug formularies.

I ask that you please be patient with the Standing Orders and Drug Bag Committees as we try to sort this out. While we know what treatment changes are important to us, writing these into protocol while working within the constrictions of available supplies has proven problematic.

While undesirable, we may have to move these suggested changes to the 2026 version of the Standing Orders if we cannot find the right answers in a short time frame.  We are working diligently to avoid this at all costs. I can assure you that by the end of this month, one way or another, the protocol will be released. I apologize for the inconveniences this may cause.
