Fire Safety Inspector (Non-Un)

The Department of Public Safety is looking for a Fire Safety Inspector. This position will report to the Fire Safety Inspection Supervisor and support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all other activities.

 

Essential Functions

 

Conduct fire inspections to ensure compliance with applicable national, state, and local building, fire, and life safety codes and standards.  Conduct fire and life safety training programs and evacuation drills.

 

Characteristic Duties

 

Conduct inspections to assure compliance with Ohio revised code, Ohio fire code, Ohio basic building code and University of Cincinnati standards.  Formulates formal reports in response to those issues identified as deficiencies and recommends corrective measures.  Applies regulations, standards, and sound fire prevention practices to detect hazardous operations and conditions, recommends proper fire prevention measures to eliminate or minimize the possibility of injury to university personnel and damage to property.

 

Conduct fire/life safety education programs, including orientation training for new employees, and conduct and evaluate fire evacuation drills.  Attend public assembly events for the purpose of assuring that applicable fire/life safety requirements are observed and enforced.

 

Conduct inspections of fire protection/detection systems to assure code required testing and maintenance is being performed.  Assist other agencies or contractors with testing of the fire protection systems. Provide local fire departments with pre-planning information.  Respond to reports of fire and fire alarms to coordinate emergency response of responding fire companies.

 

Examine architectural building plans and specifications in coordination with Planning Design & Construction to evaluate the fire resistance, means of egress, segregation of hazardous areas, and occupancy.  Ensure compliance with applicable fire safety and construction standards in project involving modification, maintenance, repair or construction of facilities and equipment.

 

Assist with investigation of fires, and hazardous condition, analyzing precipitating factors and fire cause data in order to develop specific causal relationships and methods for prevention. 

Act as the representative with outside agency’s pertaining to fire and life safety issues.

Performs related duties based on departmental needs.

 

Unusual Working Conditions

 

May work flexible hours and occasionally nights, holidays, and weekends.

 

Physical Ability: Seldom sedentary and includes walking or moving, bending, stooping, lifting, looking overhead and or working in small/cramped areas as well as using small hand tools while performing inspection duties. Climbing ladders or steps while performing inspections. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Associate degree in related field or and equivalent combination of education and experience; must have 1 year of experience in conducting, documenting and reporting fire and life safety inspections.  Must have State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector certification at time of hire and maintain throughout employment.  A valid driver’s license is also required.
